Future Camp Counsellor | Ottawa, Canada
Grade 11 student at Canterbury Literary Arts Program with a passion for working with kids, creativity, and making summer camp unforgettable.
A bit about who I am and what makes me tick
Hey! I'm Anton, a 16-year-old high school student in Ottawa who absolutely loves working with kids. I'm currently finishing Grade 11 in the Literary Arts program at Canterbury High School, where I've been developing my communication and creative thinking skills.
My friends would probably describe me as the guy who's always cracking jokes, but they'd also tell you I'm someone who genuinely cares about people. I've always been the kind of person who jumps in to help when someone's having a tough time, and I think that's why I enjoy being around kids so much – they need people who are patient, understanding, and actually listen to them.
I'm super active and physically fit – I have a membership at RA LifeFit and I stay in great shape. While I gravitate more toward mental and creative activities than traditional sports, I'm more than capable of keeping up with any physical camp activities. I love to read, write, and create, and I'm really into building games like Minecraft. I actually run a Dungeons & Dragons game night as a Dungeon Master, which has taught me a lot about leadership, storytelling, and keeping groups engaged.
What I've been up to that matters for camp
The CIT program at Firehall was honestly one of the best experiences I've had. It wasn't just about learning how to be a camp counselor – it was about understanding what makes kids feel safe, included, and excited to be at camp every day.
First Aid Certification earned Summer 2025
Volunteered at Astolot School's summer camps, working with kids of various ages. This experience gave me hands-on practice in supporting camp counselors, helping with activities, and ensuring campers had a safe and fun experience. I learned how to adapt to different situations and became more comfortable taking initiative when needed.
Where I'm learning and growing
Canterbury's Literary Arts program is pretty intense but I love it. We do a ton of creative writing, from stories and poetry to non-fiction essays. It's taught me how to express myself clearly and think creatively – skills that come in handy when you're trying to make camp activities fun or explain games to kids.
Writing and presenting every day has made me a clear communicator – essential for working with kids and parents.
Coming up with new ideas for stories has taught me to think outside the box – perfect for planning camp activities.
The skills and qualities that make me a great camp counselor
I honestly care about the kids I work with. Whether it's helping someone who's homesick or making sure everyone feels included, I pay attention to what each camper needs.
Camp days are long and active, and that's exactly what I love. I can keep up with even the most energetic campers and still have a smile on my face at the end of the day.
I know being a camp counselor is about working together with your team. I'm always ready to help out, share ideas, and support other counselors to make camp run smoothly.
Things don't always go as planned at camp. I'm good at thinking on my feet and coming up with solutions when activities need to change or issues come up.
From my literary arts background, I bring creativity to everything I do. I love coming up with fun games, stories, and activities that get kids excited and engaged.
Parents trust camp counselors with their kids, and I take that seriously. I'm reliable, follow rules, and always prioritize safety while making sure everyone has fun.
Honest reasons why I should be on your team this summer
I get the camp vibe. I've been to camps as a kid, went through the CIT program, and I understand what makes camp special. It's not just about watching kids – it's about creating memories, building confidence, and making sure every camper feels like they belong.
I can handle the chaos. Let's be real – camp gets messy sometimes. Whether it's a sudden rainstorm, a disagreement between campers, or an activity that's just not working, I stay calm and figure it out.
Kids actually like me. This sounds obvious, but it's important. I know how to joke around with kids while still being in charge. They respect me because I respect them, and that makes everything easier.
I'm reliable and ready to work hard. Camp isn't a 9-to-5 job, and I get that. I'll show up early, stay late, and give 100% every day. Your campers deserve that, and so do the families trusting you with them.
